What is Wrong with People?!

September 29, 2005

Like fleas to a dog, Christians just keep coming out and declaring that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment. Here's the latest, an Alabama State Senator. Welcome to Ethics Daily.com!

Thankfully, his comments have not gone unchallenged. William Willimon, bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church, responded:

"I have no idea what sort of senator or politician Mr. Erwin is, but he's sure no theologian. ...I'm certainly against gambling and its hold on state government in Mississippi, but I expect there is as much sin, of possibly a different order, in Montevallo as on the Gulf Coast. If God punished all of us for our sin, who could stand?"

It is well past time for a moratorium on statements declaring the Hurricane to be God's punishment. For all Christians who have made or are considering making these type of comments I have just one plea--For God's Sake Shut Up!
