Reactions to Rosa Parks

October 27, 2005

Here's two excellent articles from Ethics Daily on reactions to the death of Rosa Parks. Southern Baptists Slow to Embrace Rosa Parks What Praising Rosa Parks Should Mean

They remind us that Christians often were vocal and aggressive critics of the civil rights movement. Sadly, many Christians even justified the racist laws and practices of the time, much as many Christians had done with slavery the previous century.

Hopefully, this historical example demonstrates why it is so important that we speak out when fellow Christians use God or the Bible to justify something immoral or say dumb things. Hopefully, if we can get Christians to be more careful about what they support and say, history will judge our period of the church more favorably than the Rosa Parks era.
