Ungodly Torture

Here is an article about some religious leaders speaking out against torture: Conference attendees: Torture an ungodly act. This is good to see since some religious leaders had been coming out in favor of using torture (For God's Sake Shut Up!: Tortured Arguments).

Rev. George Hunsinger, professor of theology, an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church USA, stated his opposition to torture:

"Torture violates the basic dignity of the human person that all religions hold dear. ... [It] degrades everyone involved - policy-makers, perpetrators and victims. It contradicts our nation's most cherished ideals. Any policies that permit torture and inhumane treatment are shocking and morally intolerable."

Hopefully more religious leaders will be willing to speak out and condemn torture.

  1. Thanks for posting about this. Hunsinger is awesome, and I too am glad to see people like him and Sonderegger really tackling the issues along ecumenical lines.
