Retiring Voice!

February 01, 2006

Here is an exciting headline from the Florida Times-Union: "Vines is among leading church voices retiring." Jerry Vines of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville and former president of the Southern Baptist Convention is retiring. But as the headline suggests, hopefully his voice is retiring as well.

Not only did Vines use his voice to wrongly attack fellow Baptists during the interdenominational struggles, but he also used it to embarrass Baptists and other Christians back in 2002. In a sermon he called Muhammad a "demon-possessed pedophile." His statement garnered much negative media attention and hurt missionary efforts in Muslim nations. The Kingdom would have been better off if Vines had never made that remark. Perhaps his voice should have retired years ago.
