Vocal Athletes

February 23, 2006

Here is a story about a preacher who can preach again for the first time in months: Silence, surgery let minister preach again.

The most interesting comment in the article comes from Christopher Beatty of The Vocal Coach, an organization that provides vocal training for Christian singers and speakers. He explained that clergy do not usually view themselves as "vocal athletes the way professional singers do. ... The result is that they don't warm up and they should. And they don't cool down, particularly after aggressive preaching, and they should."

This is a good reminder of the importance of practicing and taking care of ourselves. Our voices are instruments for God. As we celebrate the victories and wince at the falls of Olympic athletes, let us also honor the work of our pastoral vocal athletes.
