Georgia on My Mind

January 30, 2008

I am heading to Atlanta today for the Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant, which starts this evening. Here are some more news articles about the exciting and historic gathering:

The Associated Baptist Press had a really good article in which American Baptist Churches USA associate general secretary Leo Thorne said, "One of the things that is really critical is this emphasis on unity. ... We're not going to do everything the same way, but we can be united in spirit. We can be united in the cross. We can be united in mission."

The Christian Science Monitor had a good article in which Mercer University's David Gushee stated, "This is an opportunity to reenvision what it means to be Baptist, and especially to build bridges across racial and denominational divides in a way that has never been done before. ... It's really a vision of the Christian faith that is driving this."

The Associated Press had a piece in which Southern Baptist Convention president Frank Page said he would be praying for the meeting even though he would not attend.

The Christian Post had a good piece about how the Celebration is intended to help mend rifts in Baptist life.

The Kansas City Star had an article in which former president Jimmy Carter observed, "It's fairly ambitious, bringing people of different theological, ethnic and geographical persuasions together."

The Tennessean had a piece that observed that the Celebration "will focus ... on the mission of Jesus."

I will have updates about the Celebration starting this evening. Please be in pray for this exciting and historic gathering.
