Government versus God?

June 23, 2010

Texas Governor Rick Perry has built his political popularity on criticism of the federal government. However, his rhetoric is often over-the-top, especially at a recent relgious-political rally. Speaking at the Texas Eagle Forum event just before the Texas Republican state convention, Perry attacked liberals for supposedly worshipping government instead of God. He declared:

We are in a struggle for the heart and soul of our nation. ... That's the question: Who do you worship? Do you believe in the primacy of unrestrained federal government? Or do you worship the God of the universe, placing our trust in him?
The problem is that such ideas are not mutually exclusive. One can believe in big government and worship God, just like one can be for small government and not believe in God. Thus, such rhetoric is inaccurate and unhelpful. Let us not level religious attacks on others because they have different political philosophies.
