IRS Complaint

Yesterday I reported on the support Missouri Baptist Convention leaders have given to embattled U.S. Senate nominee Todd Akin's campaign. The Missouri Republican is the center of national criticism after his "legitimate rape" comments. One key fact in my Ethics Daily article was the use of the MBC's resources (through its official newspaper) to promote Akin's campaign. That item caught the attention of a key church-state watchdog organization. Americans United for the Separation of Church and State today filed a complaint with the IRS urging an investigation into the MBC for violating federal laws. My article was included with the filing to show that the MBC engaged in election activity that tax-exempt organizations are barred from. The IRS generally treads lightly with religious organizations--likely to avoid First Amendment criticism--but they might offer a warning for the MBC to avoid future partisan politicking.
