Prayer and Faxing

May 19, 2013

The Mennonite Church USA encouraged congregations to join an effort today to push for "fair, just and compassionate immigration reform." Calling the effort "Prayer and Faxing," the focus was to contact congressional representatives and urge them to back comprehensive immigration reform. The effort's webpage includes resources to guide the writing of letters to be faxed. The effort is right about the need for immigration reform. But it also makes a subtle but significant point. Although the name is a clever play on words, the name works to pair the advocacy effort with prayer and associate it - through wordplay - with fasting. Additionally, putting the advocacy effort on Sunday adds to the spiritual association. Thus, advocacy becomes not just something we do because of our faith, but as part of it. Advocacy becomes an act of worship, perhaps even a spiritual discipline.
