BWA Speakers Praise Jamaican Revolutionary Hero

July 05, 2013

Ethics Daily ran my latest article, which is titled "BWA Speakers Praise Jamaican Revolutionary Hero." It is my second piece from the Annual Gathering of the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) in Ocho Rios, Jamaica (the photo, which ran with the article, is one I took of presenter Delroy Reid-Salmon). This article covers a discussion about Sam Sharpe, a black Baptist in the 19th Century who led a nonviolent revolt among enslaved persons. Although Sharpe and other enslaved persons were executed, the violent response ultimately helped lead to the abolition of slavery in Jamaica and throughout the British Empire. The panelists discussed key concepts like his nonviolent approach and his use of scripture to justify his revolution. It is a fascinating story that needs to be better known.
