Advocacy Class

August 04, 2013

Today I attended an advocacy informational session the Mennonite Central Committee - Washington Office held for a group of high school rising senors from Iowa. The students are touring Washington, D.C., to learn from its rich civic history. Meeting in a Sunday School classroom at Washington Community Fellowship, Patricia Kisare talked about the Washington Office's work (the photo is one I took of Kisare during her presentation). Focusing on issues like the farm bill and global food insecurity, the session also included a game where students took pennies to allocate how they think the U.S. budget should be distributed. The session sparked some questions and comments from the group, and it will hopefully get at least a few of them to think more about connections between faith and advocacy. After the session, I stayed for the worship service at WCF, a Mennonite-affiliated congregation, which included communion.
