The Moment

December 15, 2013

Recently I read the book The Moment: Barack Obama, Jeremiah Wright, and the Firestorm at Trinity United Church of Christ by Carl A. Grant and Shelby J. Grant. This book examines the media controversy that erupted during the 2008 presidential campaign as Barack Obama faced questions and criticism regarding comments made by his longtime pastor (for background, see post here). While much of the media commentary at the time offered more heat than light, the authors of this insightful book provided the opposite. The authors accomplished this by unfolding the media narrative as it emerged, providing important historical context by considering the politics of race in Chicago and the role of black churches in the Windy City, and actually interviewing members of Trinity United Church of Christ. With this multi-level analysis, the authors provide much nuance and depth to this unique religious-political controversy.
