Volunteerism: Worship and ServiceApril 09, 2015
I wrote the cover package for this week's issue of Word&Way (a Baptist newspaper in the Midwest). The cover package includes two themed articles, which are highlighted with the cover graphic. The theme for this issue was "Volunteerism: Worship and Service."
The first article, Volunteers: 'A Great Resource for Kingdom Advancement', focuses on how volunteers can increase missions work and some generational differences on volunteering. The piece includes comments from Greg Morrow (pastor of First Baptist Church of California, Mo, and chief operations officer of the Future Leadership Foundation), John Bailey (president/CEO of Windermere Baptist Conference Center), and Dwight Stinnett (executive minister of the Great Rivers Region of the American Baptist Churches USA).
The second article, Churches Lead Members to Worship through Service, examines churches replacing a Sunday morning of traditional worship services with a time of community volunteering. The piece includes comments from Doyle Sager (senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Jefferson City), Melissa Hatfield (associate pastor of youth/missions at First Baptist Church of Jefferson City), Sean Taylor (pastor of Chandler Baptist Church in Liberty, Mo), and Heather Entrekin (Des Peres associate professor of congregational health and director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Central Baptist Theological Seminary).
I hope the two articles spark some dialogue about volunteerism and inspire some more efforts.
