An Eye For An Eye Makes the Bible Blind

May 02, 2016

Last week while I was in Cuba, Red Letter Christians ran a column I wrote about one of the oddest religious-political moments of this presidential campaign (which is actually saying something!). The piece, An Eye For An Eye Makes the Bible Blind, looks at Donald Trump's answer when asked to name his favorite Bible verse.

Although Trump's answer remains highly problematic, I suggest it also tells us something important about various ways of reading and interpreting the Bible. And I argue in piece that many of us make a similar mistake as Trump - even if we pick more appropriate texts to name as our favorites. I hope the piece leads people to carefully think about how we read Scripture and the importance of those 'red letter' texts.
