Clergy & Politics

October 26, 2016

I wrote the October cover package for Word&Way (a Baptist magazine in the Midwest). The focus is on clergy involvement in politics.

The first article, Clergy Campaign for Seats in the Capitol, focuses on clergy running for political offices. It includes comments from U.S. Senator James Lankford (a Republican in Oklahoma) and former Missouri State Representative Judy Baker (currently the Democratic nominee for State Treasurer).

The second article, Pastors Participate in Politics at Pulpit and in Public, looks at ways some clergy engage in politics thru preaching and in public demonstrations. It includes comments from W.T. Edmonson (associate pastor at Second Baptist Church in Jefferson City, Mo., and one of the "Medicaid 23") and Jason Boone (who works for the Mennonite Mission Network and is helping promote Election Day Communion). The article also includes a couple of photos I took.

In this season heavy with politics, I hope the articles help people think more carefully about the intersection of religion and politics.
