Grace Baptist KC

May 09, 2017

I participated in a special worship service at Grace Baptist Church on Sunday, May 7. Jerry Cain, former president of Judson University in Illinois, was installed as the new pastor of this American Baptist congregation in Kansas City, Mo. I've gotten to know Jerry over the past few years, working with him both in my roles at Churchnet and Word&Way. I greatly appreciate his ministry and spirit.

Jerry is particularly passionate about bringing Baptists together across denominational, racial, and other boundaries that too often divide us. So, for his installation as he assumed a pastoral role for the first time in his decades of ministry, he included several different Baptist leaders, including Muriel Johnson, regional associate minister for the Great Rivers Region of the American Baptist Churches USA; Jeff Langford, coordinator of CBF Heartland; Jim Tanner, dean emeritus at William Jewell College; and Don Wideman, emeritus director of the Missouri Baptist Convention. Additionally, Pree Htoo and Shwe Bo of the Karen language congregation (an ethnic group from Burma) that meets at Grace also participated in the service, as did the Karen congregation’s choir.

I was honored Jerry asked me to join the service, bringing greetings from both Churchnet and Word&Way. Before offering the benediction, I noted my appreciation for his work in bringing Baptists together.
