Highlights from Regional American Baptist Meeting

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to attend part of the annual gathering of the American Baptist Churches of the Great Rivers Region in Chesterfield, Mo. I'll report on the meeting some in the November issue of Word&Way, but here are three quick highlights I particularly enjoyed.

First, I had a meeting with Solomon Rongpi, General Secretary of the Council of Baptist Churches in North East India. The CBCNEI brings together six Baptist conventions representing more than 7,000 churches. It was exciting to hear about the work of Baptists in that region and their dreams for future ministries. At the end of the meeting, Solomon gave us each a traditional scarf (often worn at special events such as weddings and ordinations). Also in the meeting: Ken Satterfield of Word&Way, Brian Ford of Churchnet, and John Jackson of Future Leadership Foundation.

Second, I met Lee Spitzer, the new General Secretary for the American Baptist Churches USA, and enjoyed talking with him. I also picked up a copy of his new book Baptists, Jews, and the Holocaust and look forward to reading it.

Third, I met historian and pastor Adrian Lamkin and enjoyed a presentation he gave on the history of Baptist work in Illinois and Missouri. I had previously interviewed Adrian over the phone for a Word&Way article, but it was nice to meet him in person.
