Prophetic, Pastoral Preaching

On Sunday, Vice President Mike Pence attended a black Baptist church since it was the day before the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. However, Sunday was also three days after President Donald Trump used an obscenity to make a racist attack on Haiti and African nations. Pence has been silent about the vulgar, racist remark. But at least he heard prophetic preaching about it.

Maurice Watson, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Largo, Md., gave a five-minute response to Trump's hateful rhetoric. It is both prophetic (in the sense of speaking truth to power) and pastoral (in the sense of loving and redemptive).

Pence's visit, by the way, was unannounced. Watson would've given these remarks anyway. But thanks to Pence's visit, Watson's remarks received a lot more attention. God sometimes works in mysterious ways!

Watson ended by noting the story of Esther since he was already preaching a series on that biblical book. His remarks with Pence in the crowd show that Watson understands the moral of the book of Esther quite well. May we have more preachers like Watson! Watch his full remarks below:
