David & Goliath Today

I've watched in horror this week at images streaming in from Gaza. On Monday, more than 50 people were killed and more than 2,000 injured - making it the bloodiest day there since the war four years ago. I offered some thoughts on the news in the opening of this week's episode of "Baptist Without An Adjective."

The news coverage sparked some jarring split screens since the deaths on Monday occurred while U.S. and Israeli officials laughed and applauded during the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem less than 50 miles away.

There were some images from Gaza that particularly caught my attention. Here are a couple of them from Getty Images (and you can see more images of Palestinians armed with just slingshots - against Israeli soldiers firing guns - in an online collection):

As I saw those photos, I thought of a little kid named David.

Armed with just five stones and a slingshot, he took on the giant. And he did so in a valley just about 40 miles from where these men this week also grabbed rocks and slingshots in an even more mismatched struggle. Perhaps we should pause and make sure we're not rooting for Goliath.

Chuck Pace here. Brian, have you heard that President Jimmy Carter will give the Commencement Address tomorrow at Liberty University. I also wonder if any other Christian university is as inclusive and open to other points of view (especially political) as LU. Hardly the raging, bigoted, fundamentalist, mean institution it's made out to be.
