House of Prayer

House of Prayer
U.S. Speaker Paul Ryan pressured Chaplain Patrick Conroy to resign - reportedly over outrage that a prayer was supposedly too political. But can prayer be apolitical? I write about issues of prayer and politics in light of this controversy in a Word&Way editorial, House of Prayer. The piece builds on ideas I developed in my book, Sacramental Politics: Religious Worship as Political Action.

UPDATE [5-14-18]: As the public controversy grew, Conroy rescinded his resignation and Ryan accepted it. Conroy will stay, but this incident still could teach us about the inherent politics of prayer.
