Reaction to Pence in Washington Post

On Wednesday, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence spoke at the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention. His appearance was already controversial as five SBC messengers made motions related to opposing him or politicians in general. A Washington Post article before his remarks included some thoughts from me.

And then he spoke. It was even worse than I expected. A hyper-partisan speech like one at a campaign rally, it was hardly appropriate for the occasion. He talked on and on about how supposedly great President Donald Trump is, even using some of Trump's favorite campaign slogans like "America First" and "Make America Great Again." Those heretical sayings stand in opposition to the SBC's work of international missions.

After his speech, the Washington Post ran another article with thoughts from me. Here's what I said in the piece:

I hope this will speech will be a learning moment for religious leaders. If you turn your pulpit over for partisan politics, it will pervert your religious gathering.
